Professor Anne enlightened our conversation with her wisdom and her powerful views of the past, present and future. She challenged our views around our current interaction with our environment and our surroundings and invited us to wake up and activate our collective wisdom.
Anne has led a battle to safeguard Martuwarra (Fitzroy River) from threats posed by mining, fracking and water extraction in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. As chair of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council, Anne wants to ensure the river is protected for generations to come, providing water security and benefits to surrounding communities.

Professor Anne Poelina is a Nyikina Warrwa (NIGANA WARRAWA) woman from the Kimberley region of Western Australia. She is an active community leader, human and earth rights advocate, filmmaker and respected academic researcher. Over the last 30 years, she has employed a powerful combination of public engagements, peer-reviewed academic papers, podcasts, community meetings, poetry, and storytelling to share the lived experiences of Indigenous people. Anne has led a battle to safeguard Martuwarra (Fitzroy River) from threats posed by mining, fracking and water extraction in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. As chair of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council, Anne wants to ensure the river is protected for generations to come, providing water security and benefits to surrounding communities.
